Engine GK

Symptoms:
- Rough idling and occasional stalling
- Loss of power during acceleration
- Increased fuel consumption
- Engine overheating
- Unusual knocking or ticking noises from the engine

Diagnosis:
- Check for vacuum leaks in hoses and intake manifold gaskets, common in older Polo 1.3 models
- Inspect ignition components such as spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and ignition timing for wear or misalignment
- Examine the carburetor or fuel injection system for clogging or improper adjustment
- Test the cooling system, including radiator, thermostat, and water pump, for proper operation to address overheating
- Listen for abnormal engine noises that may indicate valve or timing chain wear

Fixes:
- Replace cracked or brittle vacuum hoses and gaskets to eliminate air leaks
- Service ignition system by replacing worn spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and adjusting timing to factory specifications
- Clean and adjust the carburetor or fuel injectors to ensure optimal fuel delivery
- Flush and refill the cooling system, replace faulty thermostat or water pump as needed to prevent overheating
- Repair or replace worn timing chain components or valve train parts causing unusual noises
- Regular oil changes with recommended grade oil to maintain engine lubrication and reduce wear

Prevention:
- Perform routine maintenance including timely replacement of ignition parts and spark plugs
- Regularly inspect and replace vacuum hoses and gaskets before they deteriorate
- Keep the fuel system clean by using quality fuel and periodic carburetor or injector servicing
- Maintain the cooling system by checking coolant levels and condition, and replacing components proactively
- Follow manufacturer’s recommended service intervals to prolong engine life and reliability
